Wymering Echos

At times, a name can evoke a sense of excitement, creating an air of mystery and adventure. Wymering Manor was such a name for me. The journey commenced when Belinda proposed a visit, urging us to explore the manor's history. Unbeknownst to me, it unfolded as a captivating exploration of Portsmouth's past, filled with centuries of stories and eerie secrets embedded in its walls.

Expectations soared, as photos failed to capture the true grandeur of Wymering Manor. Nestled in Cosham, it transcends being just a historic house—it's a time capsule, a tangible link to Portsmouth's earliest days, mentioned even in the Doomsday Book. Its age alone held me spellbound.

As we crossed the threshold, a shiver ran down my spine. Wymering Manor whispered secrets through its aged timbers and weathered bricks, stories both frightening and intriguing, tugging at my curiosity like a ghostly presence.

From bricks and wood, my attention unexpectedly shifted to hair—delicate strands entwined in the lime plastering of the walls. I couldn't discern whether it belonged to a horse or a human, but my hunch leaned towards the latter. The creaking floorboards beneath my feet provided an eerie soundtrack to our exploration, as if the manor itself communicated its history with haunting creaks.

My fingers instinctively touched the centuries-old metal bars on the windows, wondering about the stories they had witnessed. Throughout the manor, strategically placed dolls seemed to follow my every move, adding an aura of intrigue to the mysterious atmosphere.

Our visit took a creative turn with split groups engaging in drawing exercises, holding hands, and navigating blindfolded. Sketching the manor's exterior blindfolded brought an unexpected closeness to the place.

Wymering Manor transcends being a historical site; it's a living repository of stories and mysteries. This visit unveiled a world of history, secrets, and unexpected discoveries. The manor left an indelible impression, instilling a renewed appreciation for our past and the importance of experiencing history in such a tangible and immersive way. With its creaking floors, haunted dolls, and countless untold stories, Wymering Manor has etched its memory in my heart as a place where the past truly comes alive.
